Hair Removal Basics

About Our Hair...

Let's start with a few facts:

  • • Hair is composed primarily of proteins (88%). These proteins are of a hard fibrous type known as keratin.

  • • Hair is actually dead material when it leaves its root.

  • • A single hair has a thickness of 0.02-0.04mm, so that 20-50 hair fibers next to each other make one millimeter.

  • • Hair is strong as a wire of iron. It rips after applying a force equivalent to 60kg, after it stretched itself for about 70%.

  • • The total number of hairs is determined before the baby is born. After that, the number of hairs never increases.

  • • Humanbeings have about 1,400,000 hairs on their body, with about 450,000 of them to be found above the neck.

  • • The hairs on the head grow by about one centimeter per month and reach a length of around 70 centimeters if they are not cut.

  • • Hair grows at a faster rate in the spring and summer than in autumn and winter.

  • • Hair loss or baldness (technically known as alopecia) is a loss of hair from the head or body.

Forms of Hair Removal:

Depilation
Depilation is the removal of the part of the hair above the surface of the skin. The most common form of depilation is shaving or trimming. Another option is the use of chemical depilatories, which work by breaking the disulfide bonds that link the protein chains that give hair its strength.

Epilation
Epilation is the removal of the entire hair, including the part below the skin. Methods include waxing, sugaring, epilation devices, lasers, threading, intense pulsed light or electrology. Hair is also sometimes removed by plucking with tweezers.

Hair Removal Methods:

  • Shaving/Trimming

manually, with razors, scissors or electric shavers

  • Depilatories

Creams or "shaving powders" which chemically dissolve hair

  • Friction

Rough surfaces used to buff away hair

  • Tweezing

hairs are tweezed, or pulled out, with tweezers or with fingers

  • Waxing

A hot or cold layer is applied and then removed with porous strips

  • Sugaring

Hair is removed by applying a sugar paste to the skin and removed in the direction of hair growth

  • Threading

A twisted thread catches hairs as it is rolled across the skin

  • Epilators

Mechanical devices that rapidly grasp hairs and pull them out

  • Drugs

Drugs that directly attack hair growth or inhibit the development of new hair cells

  • Long term hair removal systems

Electrology, lasers, IPLs, ultrasound or other professionally used systems
